Maryland House Power

What is “house power” ? It is simply a generic term used to describe the type of power that is commonly used to give power to a home. Our Maryland electricians are experts in all aspects of your home electrical system. Cross Electric likes to take the time to explain the important aspects of the home electrical system to the homeowner when ever we have the opportunity. Safety is always a top priority at Cross Electric, so we advise that you always have a licensed electrician make repairs or correction to your electrical system.

The power comes into your home through a large gray cable on the side of the building. It then connects to the electric meter before ending up in your electric panel. It is very important to know that all of the cable and equipment, from the power line on the pole, to your panel, DO NOT have any over current protection. This means that there is no breaker that will trip if there is a short or any damage to the cable. This is very dangerous for inexperienced or unlicensed individuals to be working on.

All the lights, receptacles, and anything else that requires electricity in your home, gets it’s electricity from your panel. Your panel has breakers in it that will trip if there is a fault or short, but you can still be seriously injured, so always have a licensed Maryland electrician work on your residential electrical system.

Grounding is the most important safety aspect of your electrical system. When your home’s electrical system is properly grounded, it makes sure that the things in your home that should not have electricity running through them, don’t. You can easily see the ground wires running from you panel. Each one is a single  bare copper wire. One should go from the panel to a metal rod in the ground ( usually outside your home) and the other should go from the panel to the water pipe at the point where it enters your home(usually at the front basement wall).

This is just a very basic explanation of your home’s power system and should never take the place of a licensed electrician’s skill and knowledge.
